SF2405 All-Flash Storage: Consolidate Sooner, Scale Forever

Having led the product development effort here a SolidFire since its inception, I often get asked, “What is the smallest configuration a SolidFire storage system can be?

Not the type of question most all-flash architecture companies receive, as many are small and designed for point solutions. SolidFire has always been different. Since its inception, SolidFire has focused on solving the consolidation and automation needs of large-scale environments.

But starting something big can start small. And many of our customers need to do just that, for a variety of reasons.

SF2405: Consolidate sooner, scale forever

The SF2405 has achieved a rather remarkable flexibility, letting you start small without limiting your system as small-scale only. It solves consolidation and automation needs sooner and with a lower entry point, but scales them much further than any other all-flash architecture when you need it.

For some, it’s because they are deploying many data centers at once worldwide. Others are embarking on their first consolidation project, which isn’t very large and can’t yet justify a significant budget allocation.

What all of these projects have in common is the potential for and very high likelihood to need to scale out. Being locked into a “small” system once projects get going, or as sales pick up, is a bad scenario. Our SF2405 nodes let you start small without limiting your system as small-scale only. It solves consolidation and automation needs sooner and with a lower entry point, but scales them much further than any other all-flash architecture when you need it.

While being able to offer a new entry point was important to us, it was also important to not limit the overall system capabilities. With the SF2405, SolidFire has achieved this rather remarkable flexibility.

In contrast, most storage systems offer something more limiting as their starting point, and at a higher $/GB. It is a frequent practice of vendors to take features away, limit scale or require disruptive upgrades to replace controller heads when a customer wants to start small but grow over time.

The SolidFire architecture is proving once again that scale-out is a perfect solution. SolidFire provides an “always on” environment with a path to do nondisruptive updates, and even scale with latest generation hardware. No downtime or system reconfiguration is required to mix the SF2405 into a current production SolidFire environment.

What’s most remarkable in the announcement of the SF2405 is how tightly integrated it is to all of SolidFire’s products and features.
