Nebula + SolidFire: Lowering Barriers to OpenStack in the Enterprise

SolidFire scale-out storage with Nebula Private Cloud System

Today we announce a joint solution with the Nebula Private Cloud System as the first vendor joining the Orion Alliance as a Strategic Member for turnkey integration and turnkey delivery.

SolidFire scale-out storage with Nebula Private Cloud SystemOur integration with Nebula’s out-of-the-box OpenStack experience can accommodate up to 5760 vCPU with 200,000 IOPS and 48 terabytes of highly available storage resources, all backed by SolidFire’s guaranteed performance. It’s a mouthful, so let’s back up and into the story that leads us to this solution, available today through Synnex and its broad network of resellers.

The combination of OpenStack’s cloud operating system, commodity hardware and a bunch of PhDs to make it all work has been an increasingly common recipe for building some of the largest scale cloud infrastructures in the world. For everyone who doesn’t have the budget or resources to take this approach, there is a need to figure out how to put the intelligence of those PhDs into the “box,” not next to it.

As it stands today, OpenStack is composed of many disparate projects and services that can make getting started a daunting task … enter the PhDs. Once underway, ongoing development and maintenance can be difficult and costly, quickly outstripping the benefits an enterprise IT department would hope to gain from an OpenStack deployment. Once in production, in-place upgrades and interoperability continue to remain a weakness that has thus far only been mitigated by throwing people at the problem.

For enterprise IT departments, particularly those that account for people costs in the TCO of any infrastructure purchase decision, the ability to drastically simplify a complex process — such as standing up OpenStack into a more consumable platform — is a requirement. Controlling for quality, interoperability, upgrades, scale testing and pre-integration with key infrastructure building blocks are just a few of the benefits to be realized from this approach.

In time, OpenStack will become more consumable as a standalone technology. But this still won’t bely the need to deliver plug-and-play options to customers that lack the budget, skillset, desire and time (or some combination of all of the above) to do it all themselves. For those not willing to wait any longer, Nebula and SolidFire have built upon our initial partnership by announcing the Nebula Private Cloud System backed by SolidFire’s scale-out block storage. Working with the Nebula team, we have assembled the unmodified OpenStack building blocks into a robust, ready-to-use, private cloud solution.

Synnex and its broad network of reseller partners offer this converged infrastructure design for customers looking to immediately benefit from the the scalability, flexibility and automation benefits of OpenStack without taking on integration, maintenance and support burdens that usually derail the ROI of these type of projects.

SolidFire’s scale-out storage platform is the leading block storage option for OpenStack users demanding enterprise-grade performance, high availability and scale to cost-effectively consolidate performance-sensitive applications onto a shared infrastructure. Integrated seamlessly into the Nebula One user interface, customers deploying this combined solution can expect to get from out-of-the-box to OpenStack in significantly less time, with less headaches and less floorspace than alternative approaches.
